What Is a Gallery Wall?
A gallery wall is a curated arrangement of multiple framed artworks displayed together on one wall. When done well, it creates a visual centerpiece that showcases your personal style and makes a room feel collected and intentional. When done poorly, it looks chaotic and cluttered.
This step-by-step guide takes the guesswork out of the process so you can build a gallery wall that looks like a professional designer put it together.
Step 1: Choose Your Wall
Not every wall is right for a gallery arrangement. The best gallery walls are:
- Visible from the main seating area: You want to see your gallery wall from where you spend the most time
- Free of large obstructions: Avoid walls with radiators, vents, or large windows in the way
- At least 5 feet wide: Gallery walls need horizontal space to breathe
Popular locations include the wall above a sofa, behind a dining table, along a staircase, or in an entryway.
Step 2: Pick a Layout Style
Grid Layout
Frames of the same size arranged in even rows and columns. This creates a clean, symmetric look that suits modern and minimalist interiors. A grid of four to nine identically framed prints delivers maximum visual impact with minimal effort.
Salon Style
Mixed sizes and orientations arranged organically around a central piece. This is the classic gallery wall look: eclectic, layered, and personal. It works in almost any room style, from traditional to bohemian.
Horizontal Line
Three to five frames hung in a single horizontal row at the same height. Simple, elegant, and easy to execute. This layout works above a sofa, headboard, or console table and reads as a deliberate design choice rather than scattered decor.
Asymmetric Cluster
A loose grouping of mixed-size pieces arranged intuitively. The key is maintaining consistent spacing between frames while varying size and orientation. This style feels relaxed and artistic.
Step 3: Select Your Art
A cohesive gallery wall needs a unifying thread. Choose one or two of these approaches:
- Color cohesion: All pieces share a common color palette, even if subjects differ
- Subject cohesion: All pieces share a theme (botanicals, landscapes, abstracts) but may vary in color
- Frame cohesion: All pieces use the same frame style and color, regardless of art subject
For your first gallery wall, start with 5 to 7 pieces. You can always add more later.
Step 4: Plan the Layout on the Floor
Before touching the walls, lay all your frames face-up on the floor. Arrange and rearrange until you find a composition that feels balanced. Take a photo of the final layout from directly above.
Spacing rules
- Maintain 2 to 3 inches between frames for a tight, gallery feel
- Use 3 to 4 inches for a more open, airy arrangement
- Keep the spacing consistent throughout the arrangement
Step 5: Create a Paper Template
Trace each frame onto kraft paper or newspaper. Cut out the shapes and tape them to the wall using painter's tape. This lets you visualize the arrangement at actual size and make adjustments without putting any holes in the wall.
Step back and check the arrangement from across the room. Adjust until it feels balanced.
Step 6: Mark and Hang
Once you are happy with the paper templates:
- Mark the nail or hook location on each paper template (measure from the top of the template to where the hanging hardware sits on the frame)
- Hammer nails through the paper directly into the wall
- Remove the paper templates
- Hang each frame on its nail
- Use a level to make small adjustments
Step 7: Fine-Tune the Final Look
Step back and look at the full arrangement. Minor adjustments make a big difference:
- Use adhesive bumpers on the bottom corners of each frame to keep them level and protect the wall
- Adjust any frames that appear slightly tilted
- Check the arrangement from different spots in the room
Gallery Wall Mistakes to Avoid
- Hanging too high: The center of the gallery should be at eye level (57 to 60 inches from the floor)
- Mixing too many frame colors: Stick to one or two frame finishes for a polished look
- Uneven spacing: Inconsistent gaps between frames make the arrangement look rushed
- Starting without a plan: Random nailing leads to regret and extra holes
