Stop guessing. The definitive guide to hanging wall art at the perfect height every time.

The Golden Rule: 57 Inches
Art galleries and museums hang artwork so the center is 57 inches from the floor. This is average eye level and creates a comfortable viewing experience. Use this as your starting point for every piece.
Above Furniture
Above a Sofa
Leave 6-8 inches between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the art. The art should be 50-75% of the sofa width. A 72-inch sofa pairs well with a 48-inch or 36-inch wide canvas.
Above a Bed
Center the art above the headboard, leaving 8-10 inches of space. The art should be at least two-thirds the width of the headboard. Portrait orientation canvases work especially well here.
Above a Console or Fireplace
The art can be the same width as the console or slightly narrower. Leave 3-6 inches of space above the surface.
Gallery Wall Layout
Start with the largest piece slightly off-center. Build outward with smaller pieces, maintaining 2-3 inches between frames. Lay everything on the floor first to test your arrangement before putting any nails in the wall.
Tools You Need
A level, a tape measure, painter tape (to mark positions), and picture hanging hooks rated for your art weight. For canvas prints under 10 pounds, a single nail or hook is sufficient.
