A wild horse in full gallop is painted from the side in loose expressive watercolor, moving from left to right across an open misty landscape. The horse is chestnut or dark bay, its mane and tail fully extended in the speed of its run. The watercolor is applied wet-on-wet for the body and legs, the brush strokes visible and directional, following the muscle lines and motion. The legs blur slightly at the hooves, suggesting speed. The background landscape is the minimum suggestion of horizon and mist, pale blue-grey washes that keep the eye on the horse. A few loose watercolor marks trail behind the tail.
